What this project is

A freedom gained twice

The history of Azerbaijan's independence has two chapters. The first began on 28 May 1918, when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed — the first parliamentary state in the Muslim world.

The republic lasted only 23 months, but it laid the foundation of statehood. Seven decades later, in 1991, Azerbaijan restored its independence, declaring itself the successor of the ADR.

Blue, red and green with a white crescent and an eight-pointed star — the flag raised by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918 and flown again over the country in 1991.

About the symbols

Memory and pride

A day that unites the country

On 28 May Azerbaijan marks Independence Day, and on 18 October the Day of the Restoration of Independence. These are holidays where history, memory and national pride come together.
