The independence holidays unite the country. On these days people remember both the first republic and its revival, and those who defended the freedom of Azerbaijan.

Since 2021, 28 May has been officially marked in Azerbaijan as Independence Day (formerly Republic Day), and 18 October as the Day of the Restoration of Independence (the former name of Independence Day).
On these days solemn ceremonies are held, flags are raised, the anthem sounds, and people recall the history of their statehood.

A symbol of the holiday is the State Flag Square in Baku — one of the places where independence takes on a visible form. Here the flag is seen from afar, from the sea and the boulevard.
The holiday is not only official ceremonies but a personal sense of belonging to one's country and its history.
